About this deal

When he finally discovers his love for art and sculpting he begins studying different styles and artists to help him grow his talent. Since the publication of This Is Memorial Device in 2017, a fictional oral history of the post-punk scene in his native Airdrie, Keenan has become one of the most prolific and innovative literary stylists of the past five years, garnering favourable comparisons to David Foster Wallace and Alan Warner. In addition to the iconic Lincoln Memorial, there are David Chester French statues in eighteen other states. Backlisted', the literary podcast, has a recurring phrase it uses for more "challenging" books - the first reading is preparation for the second. You may also opt to downgrade to Standard Digital, a robust journalistic offering that fulfils many user’s needs.

I loved how he would make scenes multicultural, like the image of families and soldiers hearing the news of Lincoln’s death, even if it wasn’t specified in the text. But as a showy, ludicrous, possibly great work of mythmaking, an idiosyncratic statement of a personal creed which also works as a late entry in the Pynchonesque field of the baggy conspiracy doorstopper. Its goal is to help you create a compelling, lasting image that perfectly captures the life and memories of the departed. There was a moment, sat reading it in the sadness of the November sun, looking down on the woefully, loveably inaccurate Crystal Palace dinosaurs, that I thought, this is so perfectly Monument Maker. Classic headstones, tombstones, and memorials for gravesites and burial places that draw on styles that translate across different cultures and generations.Sweeney’s swift prose and Fields’s evocative illustrations capture the single-minded determination with which Dan taught himself to sculpt and launched his career with the famous Minuteman Statue in his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts.

The IdeaBook is an easy-to-use online service that helps you conceive custom headstones and monuments that will faithfully and permanently depict the life and spirit of the departed. at times, it feels a little like reading Yeats * LITERARY REVIEW * An experimental novel informed by religion, art, the occult, sex, Tarot, alcohol, signs, symbols and other experimental novels. And while we're on the points of comparison, at that live launch there was something about Keenan's accent and physicality that really made me think of Grant Morrison, but it wasn't just that. I imagine Keenan in his study reaching for the whisky, the opium pipe, and heaven knows what to a blast of full volume trash-metal and Wagner.Written over the course of 10 years, MONUMENT MAKER represents the apex of Keenan’s project to create books that contain uncanny life and feel like living organisms. Then I read it, and realized every single page was necessary to get to know the man, the prolific artist, behind the monument. However, it’s a little after that that you read more information about the statue’s dedication ceremony. God and stone and hearts, characters entering the art, tunnels inside it where they jump around, outer churches and severed heads. I admired his ability to turn the book from a horizontal read to a vertical one, when it meant gazing upon one statue or another.

I loved the details about how he moved from a ten-inch sketch to larger pieces that were eventually carved into stone by the Piccirilli brothers, a transition that the illustrations show. Books are a fluid thing and even when we close the pages, when we open them again, the novel has dreamed and has changed. It is as if having concocted a banquet of literary offcuts (including Charles Olson, JG Ballard, William Blake, Strindberg and many others), the author can’t help salivating over his own work. Blocks of white marble for Daniel’s statue were blasted and cut from a Georgia mountainside by the sons and grandsons of American slaves. So many of us have been fortunate enough to visit the Lincoln Memorial and be awed by the moving sculpture of Lincoln. On the flip side, statues like the one of John Henry in Talcott, West Virginia have been abused by racists for decades.

When I visited Washington DC, I had only a few precious minutes to spend admiring the larger-than-life Lincoln Memorial. Rendered well, a truly great author could make reading the phone book an act of narrative thrust and zeal. An epic written over 10 years, it’s a meditation on art and religion, and what it means to make a monument. Considered as something many people might actually want to read, it's not as good a novel as Keenan's first two.His incantatory story telling makes the standard language of literary profiles and interviews seem so puny and prosaic you have to pump up the volume and go weird to convey the wonders of his fictional world. Not that Keenan is quite so reflexively canonical as this could suggest; yes, there is an attempt here to preserve a perfect Bach concert, but there is also the perfectly imperfect rendition of Baker Street by a mediocre yet somehow in their own way ideal local band. I am taking a school group to Washington DC this summer (my first trip to DC since my own 8th grade trip in 1990), so when I saw this book in the BlackCreatorsHQ Auction, I bid on it.
