About this deal

On the palate, it resembles Cognac, dominated by oak and nuanced with raisins, chocolate, caramel, and spice, with agave taking a subdued role.

Once the fermentation is complete, what remains is a mildly alcoholic liquid that isn’t nearly pure or strong enough to be tequila. The next step in the process is to distill that spirit twice in copper pot stills to concentrate the spirits and raise the alcohol level. In terms of aging, the four main types of tequila are Blanco (0-59 days), Reposado (60+ days), Añejo (1-3 years), and Extra Añejo (3+ years). Blanco tequilas do not spend time aging in oak, whereas the other three categories do. The 1800 Tequila brand was formed as a subset of Jose Cuervo in 1975. Most Tequilas you see in liquor stores are unaged as they were bottled right after distillation; they are known as Blanco or Silver Tequila. Unfortunately, it has become common practice in the industry to use additives to standardize the aroma and flavor of Tequilas. While legally allowed to be labeled as Tequila, these blends can be unpleasant and lead to unpleasant side effects. Is it good for sipping? In our view, Jose Cuervo have produced the very best aged Tequila currently available, and we recommend this product. Despite not being very complex or having remarkable tasting notes, 1800 Añejo is a reliable option for those on a budget. Bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV)in the United States, Canada, UK, Europe, and Australia but at a mere 76 proof (38% ABV) in Mexico. I like that I can really see the contents of the bottle, and that it isn’t obscured or masked by a giant label. Especially with something this dark and beautiful (artificial coloring notwithstanding), being able to see the spirit through the glass is something I appreciate.
