About this deal

Presenting Woo’s preferred 100-minute Unrated International Cut, there are still some uneven bits, small instances of slight speckling. Released in a blaze of publicity at the end of last year was Disney’s latest animated feature, Wish. In fact, simple things like closing car doors can sound a bit off, as discrete noises which are just not in quite the right place within the soundscape, feel 'thrown' across the array. In New Orleans, handsome drifter Chance Boudreaux (Jean-Claude Van Damme, Death Warrant, Maximum Risk) is approached by a beautiful girl (Yancy Butler, Drop Zone, Fast Money) looking for her father, a homeless vet. The Brad Pitt-starring racing drama is set to feature the actor actually driving a specially-built Mercedes race car.

The new Blu-ray is pretty great if you’re not 4K-ready, but this new Dolby Vision transfer is where it's at. Some only get one genuine peak film like Steven Seagal with Under Siege before they fade into the sad wasteland of direct-to-video churn and burn crap. They've put so much into the physical extras in the package, that it's disappointing they couldn't get hold of the commentary and interview features Kino added.

There’s consistently clear contrast between foreground and background objects, as well as subtle gradations of color tone. Now if they want to pair him up with Scott Adkins again and do a Hard Target 3 - I’d be all for that mayhem! Nearly a decade ago, I felt the same way and back then we did not have Dolby Atmos, so I wonder if a new mix would have offered some meaningful improvements. Footage around the credits and any optical effects is a little rougher around the edges with a thicker grain structure and speckling. For example, the slow-motion camera movement and the edgy guitar solos that complement the action routinely leave the impression that instead of a feature-length film one is viewing a long collection of surprisingly violent TV commercials for new products targeting young hot-blooded men.

Both copies were promoted at that time as being sourced from a “New 4K restoration of the unrated international cut of the film from the original camera negative. Several cuts later and we had a film with considerably less violence and also more of a focus on Van Damme, at the expense of the other actors: reportedly even Van Damme himself sat down with the editors to deliver an alternative cut, which trimmed away the development of the antagonists in the film in favour of more of himself, allegedly because "audiences were paying to see Van Damme, not Lance Henriksen". Van Damme is the target of an evil mercenary (Lance Henriksen) who recruits homeless combat veterans for the "amusement" of his clients — bored tycoons who will pay a half a million dollars to stalk and kill the most challenging prey of them all: Man. Black levels are much better resolved this time out - in this 4K disc and the remastered 1080p Blu-ray - giving the image a better feeling of three-dimensional depth. The film's warm color scheme is reproduced quite nicely and we get strong black levels evident throughout.

There's a significant amount of detail noticeable here that isn't quite as obvious on the included Blu-ray disc, and better depth and texture to the picture as well. Woo may not have made his best film here, but it was easily one of his best US outings, and he inarguably worked wonders with the ingredients he had, making Van Damme into an eminently cool action icon and certainly delivering his best flick, whilst crafting a bona fide action classic in the process. A man named Emil Fouchon (Lance Henriksen) and his right hand man Pik van Cleef (Arnold Vosloo) have given him a money belt with ten grand in cash inside. Rounding out the supporting cast - I’ve always been surprised that Yancy Butler never really hit it big.

However, I was quite surprised to see plenty of fluctuations during the darker and nighttime footage that often introduce minor but rather odd softness. Unfortunately we are STILL waiting on the very FIRST UNCUT EDIT of the film to be released 😞 As you may or may not be aware, but even tho this film has been sold since original VHS release as a ‘Full uncut version’ it is in fact NOT the FULL uncut version. Soon after Chance starts asking questions, the badly burned body of the girl's father is discovered by the local authorities.A glimpse at upcoming UK Steelbook release dates until early 2024: here’s what’s getting the fancy treatment and when.
