About this deal

Chewing through the bibliography (yes I am one of those freaks who reads all the footnotes and sits through the end of the film credits) - DEPT OF THINGS I NEVER WANTED TO KNOW, Virgin published a 'Sid Vicious Family Album' in 1980. England's Dreaming is an extensive collection that was purchased in 2002 from Jon Savage - the music journalist and cultural historian. Seeing Poly Styrene – this amazing-looking woman with this great voice, in huge dental braces and dressed in a military uniform – being broadcast to millions of people at teatime, and the context in which you see X-Ray; it would have been a huge shock. Although in many ways England’s Dreaming is a portrait of London at a particular time, it’s more than that.

Widely imitated but never equaled, it remains that rare work of music history that appeals to music fans, critics, and scholars alike. This is let down however by a bad choice of narrator who sounds pompous and middle aged in contrast to the book’s themes of youth and anarchy. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. And second that his obvious enthusiasm for the people, the music and the events, shines through bright enough to burn.A magnificent eight-minute military flypast, featuring sixty aircraft including a squadron of Second World War Spitfires, was cancelled due to the weather.

To me, being 22, 23 and being new to London, reading this recent history of London, I just remember thinking this is brilliant. Presents the history of music, fashion and attitude of some of the disparate and contentious personalities who emerged in the mid-70s as the harbingers of what became known as punk. Savage was there from the beginning as a teenager in Manchester and offers firsthand knowledge of his subject. But as the author states again and again in not so few words "The end was nigh," the writing keeps it in a stasis of decline for a couple hundred pages. It was a platform from which to get into the minds of more or less every teenager in the land simultaneously; it actually makes social media seem a bit limited in terms of its reach. It reflected a core of dissatisfaction and resentment built up at the end of a decade that saw the introduction of the three-day week in Britain, strikes, increasing unemployment and collapsing public services. Mr Savage has made an excellent review of the period and analysed the precursors whilst managing to keep the sense of wonder that was there all through the punk years. The second was a feckless playboy who never produced an heir, squabbled constantly with his government, spent public funds on his mistresses, and whose entire family was overthrown a few years after his death.
