Our books are carefully classified and organized by level, making it easy for you to progress and see measurable results. For several reasons, undertaking an analysis of letter frequency is not very useful as an approach to solving these puzzles. All the letters A-Z are present in the early puzzles, with one number for each letter (later puzzles don't necessarily have all 26 letters in the grid).
Ah, that gives us the R of RAZED, which also tells us that a vowel will be no good so actually R is probably the only option. Difficultly level can be specified by the user, which determines the pool of words the generator will use. If you feel the need to exercise your grey cells and already have a Sudoku on your iPhone, then this could be a suitable addition for your Apps Collection. I don't think there's much I can do to help improve those :-), but solving Codeword puzzles probably helps at least a little bit with both.
In my current example puzzle, this annoyingly still doesn't make anything super-obvious, but we now have -A-L-R as a word. My father used to do the Daily Mail codewords every day, but he always started by assuming the most common number must represent E (so he hated most puzzles made by my system! Harder puzzles have less common words, names, abbreviations, initials, multi-words, plurals, US and UK spellings, and often less starter letters. In spite of the compiler's best efforts, there is likely to be a high frequency of certain letters, such as the vowels and letters r, t, n, d and l.Try to forget about the uncommon letters until you have gotten a large chunk of the puzzle out of the way. Fascinating stuff, all of it, but largely irrelevant, and annoying when you know you will never find the word in any other context. If you use clues on your first time through, your monthly score for the puzzle will be lower than your best daily score. I occasionally can use this for codewords as well, particularly if there are multiple starting letters in a single long word, which narrows down its output considerably. Medium puzzles generally have fewer repeated words throughout the pack, and some puzzles don't have all 26 letters represented, so for example Q, X and Z are often crossed off because they don't appear in that puzzle. Technique: spot a word with an unusual letter or letter-combination in it, think what possibilities there are for it, and try out some that seem likely.Codeword continues the tradition by offering enjoyable puzzles that challenge the player without adding to their stress levels. From that information and the few initially provided letters it is possible to work out which words will fit in the boxes.
Last solution (time-consuming) is to make a list of all the numbers and count up the number of times they appear, and then try and decide if the most common are from the shortlist "ARIESTA" or similar.
Phrases, hyphenated words and foreign words that are not yet fully accepted in English are all avoided, as are proper nouns.
